Story About Self Reliance


We should make a habit of doing our work on our own. We should be independent.


Once upon a time The train came and stopped at a station in Bengal.

This station belonged to a village in Bengal. As soon as the car stopped, a suit-booted youth got down from the car.

The young man had a suitcase and a bed in his hand.

The station was completely deserted. Far from selling goods at the station, no porter was visible.

The young man started calling 'coolie-coolie'. The young man was not even aware that there were no porters in the village stations.


The young man was repeatedly making the sound of 'coolie-coolie'. He was upset. The train had also left from there. Suddenly a man dressed in plain and clean clothes came there. The young man asked the man, "Isn't there a porter here? I've been troubled for too long without the porter." The man said, "Come on, I'll deliver your stuff." The man followed the young man with a bed on his head and a suitcase in his hand.


The young man took the man to his house. On reaching home, the suit-booted youth took out the wallet from his pocket to pay wages to the man. The man who brought the goods said, "There is no need for this."

The young man was very surprised to see this. He thought, what a porter is it that he does not take money even after carrying a load. At the same time the elder brother of that young man came there. He bowed respectfully to the man and said, "Hey! Vidyasagar ji, how are you here? Come, sit down, why are you standing?" It did not take long for the young man to understand that this is not an ordinary man, but Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar himself.

The young man was ashamed and fell at his feet and said, "Sir, forgive me. I couldn't recognize you, I made a big mistake."

Ishwarchandra picked it up and hugged him. He said, “There is nothing to apologize for. We are all Indians. Our country is still poor. We should not be ashamed to do our work. We should always be self-reliant."
